Worn by personnel in the 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, the 602nd Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (also known as a unit crest or DUI) was approved for wear on 21 September 1998. Consisting of a shield with blue background and a red scroll containing the text of the unit motto “To Mend Broken Wings,” the insignia prominently features a chevron with nebuly (circular protrusions); the chevron is a longtime heraldic symbol of Support, while the nebuly set against the blue background simulates clouds to recall the sky and aviation.
The nebuly further create the appearance of interlocking sections on the shield, reflecting the teamwork and cooperation that have made the organization so successful. A black wing, upright and in pristine condition, reinforces the commitment to mission fulfillment that is embodied in the unit motto.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
