U.S. ARMY 61ST CAVALRY REGIMENT, 1ST SQUADRON OVAL

On 14 November 2005, the 61st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Squadron’s Airborne background trimming—more commonly referred to as an “oval,” for obvious reasons—was approved for wear. The approval came while the Squadron was deployed to Iraq as part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.

It was the first of several deployments in support of the Global War on Terrorism and one for which it was subsequently awarded the first of four Meritorious Unit Commendations earned during the conflict. Two of the remaining three were MUCs also included its parent organization, the 4th BCT, 101st Airborne Division as a recipient, while the third was awarded solely to the Squadron, its subordinate Troops (A, B, C), and Company D of the 801st Support Battalion.

Between June and September 2006, the Squadron faced some of its most determined opposition when it as tasked with subduing insurgent forces in East Baghdad who had access to numerous caches of arms and IEDs. During the four-month operation, the Squadron fought in more than twenty direct-fire and complex contacts, overwhelming the enemy in each one while capturing high-value targets and securing the enemy’s weapons and IED caches. For its heroism against an armed enemy combatant during this period, the Squadron was tapped for a Valorous Unit Award in March 2008.

After a final deployment in 2013 with the 4th Brigade Combat Team that resulted in the Squadron receiving its last MUC for service between May and November, both it and the Brigade were inactivated on 25 April 2014.

Officially referred to as Airborne background trimming, this oval was worn by members of the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment who had earned Parachutist and/or Air Assault badges. The main portion of the badge is centered on the oval and the combination worn on the coats of the AGSU and ASU, the shirt of the Class B ASU, and the green or blue Army Maternity Tunic (female Soldiers only). Guidance on the wear of the oval and badges and the placement of badges on authorized uniforms is found respectively in Chapters 21-32 (b) and 22-16 (b) of the  January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1.
