27th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia.Ovals are technically called background trimming because they serve as backing for the Parachutist and Air Assault badges. Authorized for wear on Service Uniform coats (including the Dress Uniform variation of the ASU), Service Uniform shirts, and green or blue Army Maternity Tunics, the oval-and-badge combination is considered a single item for purposes of determining maximum number of badges/decorations on a garment. Use the outermost edge, be it the badge or oval, when measuring distances between other badges, ribbons, pockets, etc.
Interestingly, the oval currently worn is different than the one worn from 1957 to 1992. It featured a red border and field as opposed to the white border and red field that replaced it.
The 618th Engineer Company, now designated as the 618th Engineer Support Company, is assigned to the 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade
