The 628th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest or DUI, was approved for wear on 9 March 2009. Its distinctive checkered shield outline, denoting strategy and countermeasure, is in oriental blue and silver gray, official branch colors of the Military Intelligence Corps Gold spearheads highlight the unit’s combat support functions, with the color denoting honor and high achievement. A black background stands in contrast to the lighter blue and silver, symbolizing the night-and-day mission of the Battalion as well as the covert and overt ops the unit performs. A crossed key and lightning flash represent security and electronic warfare, respectively.
CHAOS CLARITAS VICTORIA, the battalion motto, is Latin for “Chaos, Clarity, Victory,” a succinct description of the Battalion’s mission to derive information from the chaos of conflict that can be analyzed to provide the clarity of vision necessary to determine the appropriate strategic and tactical steps that lead to victory.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

According the military analysis Web site Global Security, the 628th Military Intelligence Battalion was formed in September 1996 and was assigned to the 28th Infantry Division, Pennsylvania Army National Guard. It was headquartered in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
