The 628th Aviation Support Battalion has held a substantial number of designations since it was originally constituted as an Aircraft Maintenance Detachment, including 428th Transportation Detachment; Company E, 728th Maintenance Battalion; Company E, 28th Aviation Battalion; 1228th Transportation Company; Company F, 104th Aviation Battalion; and 628th Support Battalion.
Despite all the changes, however, it has always been associated with the 28th Infantry Division, as an element of the Division or assigned to it (or to a unit that is itself an element of the Division). After a year-long deployment to the Middle East, the 628th Aviation Support Battalion was recognized as the 2021 Outstanding Logistics Support Unit of the Year by the Army Aviation Association of America. As of Autumn 2023, the unit is assigned to the 28th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade, 28th Infantry Division, Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however. The Distinctive Unit Insignia was officially approved for wear by the 628th Support Battalion on 21 April 2003. Buff (gold) and scarlet are the insignia colors of Support organizations, with the gold representing high achievement and honor. The shield portion of the insignia is divided in half by a bend (diagonal bar), with a keystone, a symbol of strength, in the lower half denoting the organization’s home state and assignment (Pennsylvania Army National Guard). In the upper half is Pegasus, the winged horse that served as Perseus’ mount, on a blue background representing the Battalion’s Aviation Support mission and its heritage. A scroll attached to the shield contains the inscriptions “Without Compromise,” the Battalion motto.More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
