U.S. ARMY 640TH SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly called a unit crest or DUI for short, the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 640th Support Group was approved for wear on 11 May 2000. Inscribed in the red annulet that makes up the outer portion of the insignia (signifying the continuity and purpose of the Support mission) is the unit motto “Solid Support Total Victory,” a phrase that poignantly delineates the critical role of Support in achieving mission success both on the Battlefield or while responding to a natural or man-made disaster.

Scarlet, blue, and white, the predominant colors of the insignia, reference both the state flag of Tennessee, the unit’s home state, and the United States of America. The gold used for the upward-pointing chevron denotes excellence; the silver (white) of the reversed chevron denotes integrity while its shape recalls the letter “V” and thus the state’s nickname of the “Volunteer State.” Together, the two chevrons directly refer to the Support and Vicory explicitly listed in the motto. In total, the chevrons contain six stars, an allusion to the number of states in which the 640th Subordinate Group’s subordinate units were stationed when the insignia was approved for wear.

Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Apparently inactive at this time (Autumn 2023), the most recent reference we can find to the unit while it was active is in the Spring/Summer 2007 Issue of Army Reserve magazine, a time when it had been called into active military service. At that time, the organization was designated as the 640th Regional Support Group, was assigned to the 90th Sustainment Brigade, 103rd Expeditionary Support Command, 377th Theater Sustainment Command, and was headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee.
