U.S. ARMY 642ND SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Now worn by personnel in the 642nd Regional Support Group, a U.S. Army Reserve unit headquartered in Decatur, Georgia, the 642nd Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 21 September 2000. The focal point of the insignia is a demi-ionic column that represents strength and support; the lightning flash surmounted on it is an emblem of energy and swift response, reinforce the unit motto “Dedicated And Responsive.” A pair of crossed swords are a sign of teamwork and cooperation, highlighting the Group’s military preparedness and its mission of support for combat units. The buff (gold) background behind the swords is one of the two colors used by Support organizations (scarlet is the other, seen in the lighting flash).

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Constituted on 31 December 1998 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 642nd Support Group in the Army Reserve, the Group was activated three-and-a-half months later at Fort Gordon, Georgia (redesignated as Fort Eisenhower in October 2023). It relocated to Decatur, Georgia on 1 July 2005 and was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD), 642nd Support Group on 27 October 2006.

Elements of the Group were ordered into active duty in support of the Iraq Surge in late 2006,  and in April 2008 the Battalion’s HHD was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service between 29 January and 31 December 2007 while assigned to the HHC, Special Troops Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, which was cited for providing “unparalleled support to Multi-National Division-Baghdad and Multi-National Corps-Iraq.”

As of Autumn 2023, the 642nd Regional Support Group is still headquartered at Decatur, Georgia and is a subordinate unit of the Army Reserve’s 143rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, 377th Theater Sustainment Command.
