Worn today by members of the 647th Regional Support Group, the 647th Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or DUI) was approved 15 December 1999. The traditional colors for Support organizations, buff (gold) and scarlet, are found in the scroll that contains the unit motto, “Swift To Support.” Buff is also used for the chevron, heraldic symbol for support that here is surmounted by a blue lightning flash indicating speed and accuracy. Behind the chevron is a wheel, taken from the Quartermaster insignia, that signifies movement of supplies and support to Soldiers.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Prior to being redesignated a Regional Support Group, a Detachment from the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 647th Support Group was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from its HQ and Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan during the period from 14 March to 8 December 2014; interestingly, the award was announced in Permanent Order 343-10 dated 9 December 2014—the day after the ending date of the period for which the award was given. The Support Group was also the recipient of an Army Superior Unit Award in 2009.
In March 2009, the 647th Regional Support Group was established as a brigade-level command at Wichita’s 1LT Lanny J. Wallace Army Reserve Center. Assigned to the 416th Theater Engineer Command, U.S. Army Reserve, the 647th RSG was the only unit of its kind in the Command—a deployable headquarters capable of managing bases, camps, or base clusters comprising 6,000 or more personnel that require more than basic life support.
As of Autumn 2023, the 647th Regional Support Group remains a part of the 416th Theater Engineer Command and is still headquartered at Wichita, Kansas.
