U.S. ARMY 648TH SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Currently worn by members of the 648th Regional Support Group, a U.S. Army Reserve unit headquartered in St. Louis and assigned to the Reserve’s Military Intelligence Readiness Command, the 648th Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 7 September 2000.

The insignia pays homage to the organization’s home city of St. Louis with an arch that simulates the city’s famous Gateway Arch, reinforced by the motto “Gateway To Support” that also references the city’s nickname of “Gateway to the West.” Two blue, wavy chevronels, an allusion to the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, also allude to the unit’s geographic location. An upright sword in the middle of the insignia denotes the unit’s military preparedness and its goal of providing total support.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

As of Autumn 2023, the 648th Regional Support Group consists of its HQ and HQ Company stationed in St. Louis, Missouri, two Joint Intelligence Operations Centers, a Joint Intelligence Center, and a Joint Analysis Center.

Its most recent major assignment was management of the Fort Bliss Mobilization Brigade in Texas, which manages, plans, and coordinates Support services associated with the mobilization and demobilization of Reserve and National Guard units. By the time it was relieved of the mission on 25 January 2021, the Group had overseen the mobilization and demobilization of more than 40,000 Soldiers, most notably over 3,000 Soldiers from the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team; this was the largest Armored Brigade Combat Team from the National Guard to mobilize 100% of its units and personnel in over a decade. It also mobilized nearly 2,000 members of the 256th Infantry Brigade Combat Team during its tenure at Fort Bliss.
