U.S. ARMY 67TH MAINTENANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The yellow and crimson of the 67th Maintenance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia reflects the unit’s status as the 67th Ordnance Battalion when the insignia was approved. On the shield, a nucleus with three orbiting electrons (symbolizing work with nuclear weaponry) is superimposed over a six-pointed star (six campaign streamers from World War I), with the Zuni symbol for the sun centered in the middle of the star to denote the unit’s location in New Mexico at the time the insignia was approved. The unit motto of “Strength Through Support” emphasizes the necessity of all types of support to achieve mission success.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 67th Maintenance Battalion was originally organized as the Mechanical Repair Shop No. 305 in October 1917 at Fort Bliss. It was reorganized and redesignated as the 2nd Motor Repair Battallion, then as the 36th Quartermaster Regiment in 1936. The Regiment was broken up in 1940 and the 1st Battalion was redesignated as the 67th Quartermaster Battalion; its HQ was activated at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) on 1 June 1941.

The following year the HQ was redesignated as HQ, 67th Ordnance Medium Maintenance Battalion and it took part in the assault landings of the Algeria-French Morocco campaign in November 1942; in 1943 it became HHD, 67th Maintenance Battalion. It would go on to take part in the Sicily, Rome-Arno, North Apennines, and Po Valley campaigns in Italy before inactivation on 25 September 1945. In June 1950, the Battalion was deployed to Korea and took part in all ten campaigns, with its exceptional service being recognized with three Meritorious Unit Commendations. Inactivated in Korea in June 1955, the Battalion was reactivated in New Mexico on 20 March 1957 and tasked with ordnance maintenance support for nuclear weaponry.

The Battalion would go on to serve in Seneca (New York), the Dominican Republic, and Fort Benning in Georgia, where it was reorganized and redesignated as HHD, 67th Maintenance Battalion before subsequent transfer to Fort Ord in California, the site of its inactivation on 27 February 1992. (Note: Fort Benning was redesignated as Fort Moore in October 2023.) In August 2005, the Battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 167th Support Battalion (Airborne), assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division and activated as Fort Richardson in Alaska.

A little over a year later, on 15 September 2006, the Battalion was relieved from its assignment to the 4th BCT, 25th Infantry Division, redesignated as the 67th Maintenance Battalion (again), and inactivated.
