U.S. ARMY 7TH SPECIAL FORCES GROUP (AIRBORNE) BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

Organizational flashes are worn in lieu of the standard Army flash by personnel authorized to wear the green, maroon, or tan berets associated or aligned with Special Forces, Airborne, and Ranger units (full guidance is found in Section 18-3 of DA 670-1). The flash is positioned on the beret so it is directly above the left eye, with Enlisted personnel centering their Distinctive Unit Insignia (or Regimental Distinctive Insignia) on it and Officers wearing their nonsubdued grade insignia on it.

Officially known as background trimming, ovals are worn beneath Parachutist or Air Assault badges worn on the coat of Army Service/Dress uniform, the Service uniform shirt, or the Maternity Tunic. The badge and oval are considered one item for measurement and placement on the uniform when they’re worn together, and if the badge is obscured by a lapel it may be moved so the edge of the oval is aligned with the left edge of ribbons and medals.

Like all Special Forces Groups (SFG), the 7th SFG (Airborne) looks to the establishment of the First Special Service Force (the 1st Company, 1st Battalion, First Regiment of the FSSF, to be exact) as its official origin point. The group was reconstituted and consolidated with Company A of the 1st Ranger Battalion to form the HHC, 7th Special Forces Group in April 1960, which was in turn consolidated with HHC, 77th Special Forces Group in June of that same year.

The 7th Special Forces Group has been deployed numerous times to Afghanistan and Iraq in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, and since 2004 the Group or its component units have been awarded eight Meritorious Unit Commendations, three Valorous Unit Awards, and a pair of Army Superior Unit Awards.
