The 704th Military Intelligence Brigade was formed in 1987 when the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) redesignated some of its TDA (tables of distribution and allowances) units as numbered companies, battalions, and brigades in the 700 series for Military Intelligence. Using existing assets, three new Military Intelligence (MI) Brigades—the 701st, 703rd, and 704th—were created, along with several new Battalions. Today, the 704th comprises three MI Battalions: the 741st, 742nd, and 743rd, the last based at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado.
Officially known as Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) or Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Former Wartime Service (SSI-FWTS), these insignia are commonly referred to as simply “unit patches.” The colored version was authorized for wear at the top of the sleeve, just below the shoulder, on the Class A/B Army Green Uniform that was officially phased out in 2015. The subdued version is authorized for wear in the same location on the Army Combat Uniform or other utility uniforms. Retired personnel may wear the SSI–FWTS on the right shoulder of the Army green service uniform if they were authorized wear of the SSI–FWTS while on active duty.
