U.S. ARMY 71ST EXPEDITIONARY MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally approved on 29 July 2010 for the 71st Battle-field Surveillance Brigade, the 71st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, pays tribute to its heritage as a component in the 36th Infantry Division as well as its missions, first as a Battlefield Surveillance Brigade and subsequently as a Military Intelligence Brigade. Blue, yellow, and scarlet fields take up the bulk of the shield containing a star, a griffin (sometimes spelled gryphon), and a wing. Scarlet is historically the color of Artillery, a nod to the Brigade’s former service as the 36th Infantry Division Artillery Brigade; it is also a reference to the Battlefield Surveillance job of targeting enemies. The oriental blue in the upper right is the primary color of Military Intelligence; the yellow in the bottom section has been a Cavalry color since the branch was formed.

The white star represents the Lone Star state of Texas, the Brigade’s home. Griffins are used in heraldry to embody watchfulness, vigilance, alertness, and courage—all attributes of the Soldiers serving the Brigade. A wing is an allusion to the Brigade’s airborne elements while it was designated as Battlefield Surveillance. Each of these is surrounded by a silver outline, the heraldic color of honest and sincerity. “On The Hunt” is the perfect unit motto for the Brigade in its current incarnation as a Military Intelligence organization, constantly seeking to find new information on enemy dispositions, plans, and resources.

As of Winter 2024, the 71st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade is an active unit in the Texas Army National Guard with a lineage that can be traced back to elements of the 36th Infantry Division. It comprises two Military Intelligence
Battalions, the 636th and the 250th.
