U.S. ARMY 75TH RANGER REGIMENT, 1ST BATTALION BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

The design of the 75th Ranger Regiment, 1st Battalion beret flash is the same as the 75th Regiment flash— four diagonal lies of scarlet, khaki, orange, and white divide the insignia into halves colored green and ultramarine blue—but with a small notch added to the left and right sides to denote it is the Regiment’s 1st Battalion. Similarly, the background trimming, or oval, employs the same system to denote the Regiment and its subordinate Battalions, albeit with a radically different design.

Beret flashes are worn by all members of the 1st Ranger Battalion and are centered on the tan beret designated specifically for Ranger units. Officers place their non-subdued rank insignia on the center of the flash, while NCOs and Junior Enlisted Soldiers instead wear the 75th Ranger Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia in the same manner.

Ovals are placed beneath Parachutist and Air Assault badges for wear on the AGSU and ASU coats (including Dress variation of ASU), the Service Uniform shirt, and the green or blue Army Maternity Tunic authorized (female Soldiers only); the two items count as one when determining maximum allowable devices on a uniform. Complete wear guidance for the oval and organizational flash can be found in Paragraph 21-32 of January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1.

Frequently referred to as the 1st Ranger Battalion, the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment was originally organized in the Army of the United States in the China-Burma-India Theater as an element of the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional) on 3 October 1943. It was consolidated with Company C, 475th Infantry on 10 August 1944 and retained that designation until it became Company C, 75th Infantry ten years later on 21 June 1944. Three decades later, it was redesignated as HHC, 1st Battalion, 75th Infantry in January 1974, and in 1986 it was given the designation it holds today of 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

The Battalion is one of the most heavily decorated Army organizations with a lineage that dates back only to World War II, with seven Presidential Unit Citations, three Valorous Unit Awards (the Battalion’s B and C Companies are each entitled to an individual Valorous Unit Award), two Republic of Vietnam (ROV) Cross of Gallantry Awards, and an ROV Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class. And according to the Army Times, the Battalion has been deployed nearly two dozen times since the launch of the War on Terrorism, taking part in almost 200 combat operations and killing or capturing some 1,900 enemy combatants.
