Both the flash and oval of the Special Troops Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division were approved on 23 February 2006, nearly six months before the Battalion’s Distinctive Unit Insignia was authorized for wear. The flash is worn on the maroon beret to the reflect the Battalion’s Airborne status and serves as the backdrop for non-subdued insignia of grade (Officers) or the Battalion’s Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or DUI). These are centered on the flash, which itself is centered on the stiffener of the beret.
The oval, or background trimming, is worn beneath Parachutists and Air Assault Badges on Service Uniform coats (both AGSU and ASU, as well as the Dress Variation of ASU), Service Uniform shirts, and on the green or blue Army Maternity Tunic. They count as a single item for measurement (done from the outermost edge of either the badge or oval) or toward the badge limits, which are not the same for the AGSU and ASU.
As of June 2021, the Special Troops Battalion is currently assigned to the 82nd Sustainment Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division. You can learn more about the its origins, lineage, battle honors, and military decorations by visiting our store’s Web page for the
