U.S. ARMY SERVICE HAT FOR FEMALE COMPANY GRADE OFFICERS
The Service Hat for female Company-Grade Officers features a half-inch gold hat band and an insignia of the Coat of Arms of the United States. When the Service Hat is positioned properly on the head, the hatband creates a straight line around the head that is parallel to the ground. A space of between a half-inch and inch should be between the brim of the hat and the eyebrows.
One of the topics that comes up frequently when discussing the design of male and female Army uniforms is the difference between the caps for each ensemble. The Service Cap for male Company-Grade Officers, for instance, includes a hatband that is made in the color of the officer’s branch of service (Artillery, Infantry, etc.) with a gold border on the top and bottom; the female Company-Grade Service Hat has only a gold hatband.
This design decision raises the question of why male Company- and Field-Grade Officers display their branch colors, but females holding equivalent ranks are not identified in the same manner. In 2016, the idea of having a single, “bus driver” style Service Cap for both male and female Soldiers and Officers was raised, but the announcement of the likely return of the World War II-era "pinks and greens” uniform placed this particular subject on the back burner for now.
