As the leader in Army Aviation Training, the 110th Aviation Brigade is constantly seeking new ways to ensure the service does not experience a shortage of Aviators and other Flight personnel. One approach that holds considerable promise is the use of virtual reality simulators. Although these have been used for decades as part of the training regiment for fixed-wing aviators, technology has only recently advanced enough to make a rotary-wing simulation provide enough realism—both in visual and physical feedback in the form of unit vibration—to warrant serious consideration as a training tool.
The Army announced a pilot program based on simulators it has developed in-house and in partnership with private simulation manufacturers in March 2019. Starting in April 2019, the program will comprise a full flight-school class (48 students) with half serving as a control group and receiving normal flight-school training that includes 32 hours of live flight. Another group of a dozen students will receive 18.7 hours of live flight, with a third group of 12 receiving 11 hours of live-flight time. The second and third groups, however, will receive more total flight time—live and virtual—than the control group, with one receiving 45 hours total and another receiving just over 50.
