The 115th Field Artillery Brigade's decorated history goes all the way back to the late 19th Century. The unit was originally created in the Wyoming National Guard as the 1st Regiment in 1888. The unit was quickly re-designated in 1890 as the 1st Regiment Infantry, but would not be called into Federal service until 1898 as the 1st Battalion, Wyoming Volunteer Infantry to serve in the Spanish-American War as part of the Manila Campaign, and in the Philippine Insurrection. The Battalion was mustered out of Federal Service in 1899 at San Francisco.
During the next four years it underwent two re-organizations, becoming the 2nd Regiment Infantry in 1899 and the 3rd Infantry Regiment in 1903. The Regiment was split up in 1915, but was reorganized the following year as a provisional Infantry Regiment and mustered into Federal Service for WWI. The unit participated in five campaigns in the war: the German Champagne-Marne, the French Aisne-Marne, the battle for St. Mihiel, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, and the campaign in Champagne 1918.
The Regiment was broken apart again in 1917, its elements absorbed as part of the 41st Division. The former 3rd Regiment Infantry was reorganized back into the Wyoming National Guard as the 1st Cavalry. In 1922 it was re-designated as the 115th Cavalry as part of the 24th Cavalry Division. The assignment to the 24th ended in 1940, and the 115th was inducted back into federal service for the war effort in WWII in 1941. During the war it was re-designated as the 115th Cavalry, Mechanized in 1942. It fought in two campaigns, in Northern France, and in Central Europe. The Regiment was broken up yet again in 1944 and its elements reorganized.
In 1951 several of the former elements consolidated to form the 115th Armored Cavalry, stationed in Cheyenne. In 1953 the unit became the 115th Field Artillery Group, and in 1959 became the 115th Artillery Group. The Group absorbed with Company C, 102nd Engineer Battalion in 1967. The unit went back to being the 115th Field Artillery Group in 1972, and took on its current name of the 115th Field Artillery Brigade in 1978.
