Originally activated in June 1965 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 14th Military Police (MP) Group in Germany, the 14th Military Police Brigade was reorganized in 1968 at Fort Meade, Maryland and spent four years providing administrative MP support for the nation’s capital until its inactivation in 1972. In 1981, it was redesignated as a Headquarters and Headquarters Company and simultaneously activated in Germany; four years later it received its current designation as the 14th Military Police Brigade.
Supporting U.S. VII Corps, the 14th MP Brigade was responsible for wartime law enforcement, rear-combat operations, and POW operations, in addition to training MPs on the procedures necessary to carry out law enforcement and peacetime force protection in VII Corps’ 13 military communities. During Operation Desert Shield in 1990, the brigade deployed one battalion to Saudi Arabia; the units remaining in Germany coordinated efforts with the local law-enforcement authorities—both civilian and military—to ensure safety and security for soldiers and families of units who had not been deployed for the Southwest Asian operation. The brigade received official credit for participation in three campaigns as well as a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its contribution to the success of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
After a five-year period of inactivation (1994-1999), the headquarters of 14th MP Brigade were transferred to U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, and the unit was activated at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Its current mission is to provide the Army with soldiers, legal authorities, and other leaders able to carry out policing, detention, and security missions in a broad variety of military operations.
