The 174th Air Defense Artillery (ADA) Brigade was activated on 1 September 2008 as part of the Army’s reorganization of the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard to establish a modular force whose main maneuver forces are brigades. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, the 174th ADA is tasked with the command and coordination of the operations of subordinate ADA Battalions and associated assigned or attached units in the theater Army.
An example of the flexibility the reorganization provides came in June 2017 when the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery deployed roughly three dozen Soldiers to the National Capital Region to provide command and supervision support for Operation Noble Eagle, the ongoing operation to utilize radar, ground-based air defense systems and communications to provide protection against potential threats.
At the same time, the 2nd Battalion, 174th ADA Regiment sent 280 Soldiers overseas in support of Operation Inherent Resolve by conducting Counter Rocket Artillery Mortar missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, marking the first time an Ohio National Guard unit has deployed to two theaters. This adaptability makes empowers the unit motto of QUISQUAM USQUAM—Latin for “Anytime Anywhere.”
