The 201st Military Intelligence Brigade, which eventually transformed into the 201st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade, was formed on 1 September 1987 through the consolidation of 503rd Army Security Agency Group and the 201st Military Intelligence Detachment. Both units had predecessors in their lineage that had fought in World War II. Precursor to the 503rd was the 323rd Signal Company, Wing, which activated 1 September 1942 and was stationed on the Marshall Islands in support of U.S. Army Air Force units. The 201st Military Intelligence Detachment’s forebear was the 201st Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment; it was activated in New Guinea on 20 August 1944.
Between them, the units took part in four World War II campaigns (Antisubmarine, New Guinea, Western Pacific, and Luzon) and garnered a Meritorious Unit Commendation. The 201st Counter Intelligence Corps would go on to take part in nine campaigns in the Korean War. It would be the last campaign participation credit either unit would receive.
In 2011, the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its deployment between 27 August 2009 and 20 August 2010, with special notice given for its role in preventing “malign external influence” from affecting the Iraqi National elections, an example of the Brigade adhering to the standard espoused by its motto of "With Courage And Vision."
