Although it has not been awarded any official honors or official credit for campaign participation since its creation in 2004, the work of the 20th Support Command (CBRNE) undergirds our country’s relentless efforts to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) by terrorist organizations or the states who sponsor them.
Serving as a command-and-control nexus for both Army and Joint forces tasked with the elimination of WMDs, the 20th Support Command is the go-to unit when forces are required for any operations—small-scale, major-combat, or contingencies—that require a response to threats posed by CBRNE devices or any other WMD. Regardless of the situation, the Command always operates with the guiding principle set forth in its Latin motto
Libertatem Defendimus—“Liberty We Defend.”
In the Combat Service Identification Badge (CSIB) of the 20th Support Command (CBRNE), we see the five threat areas on which the Command’s attention is focused: Biological, Chemical, High-Yield Explosive, Nuclear, and Radiological. A flaming sword in the middle of the crest—an image that also appears in the Command’s unit crest—is emblematic of our nation’s aggressive posture in the ongoing fight against international and domestic terrorism. A black border serves as a memorial to the personnel who died during the attack on September 11, 2001 and in the ongoing battles of the War on Terror.
