Nicknamed “Leader Brigade” and with a motto of “Naturally We Lead,” the 214th Field Artillery Brigade was originally created as the 214th Field Artillery Group in 1944 and was inactivated for the second time in 2015; the only other time it was inactive was between 1945 and 1958.
The Brigade was headquartered at Fort Sill, Oklahoma at the time of its second inactivation. It had been designated as a Fires Brigade for just under eight years, from 10 October 2006 until 1 October 2014 and its redesignation as the 214th Field Artillery Brigade. It would serve under that name for a period of a little less than eight months before it was inactivated on 21 May 2015. It had previously been designated as Field Artillery Brigade since 1979.
During the War on Terrorism, the Brigade’s HQ and HQ Battery (or HQ Detachment) was selected for a Meritorious Unit Citation following three of its deployments, the last running from 1April 2012 to 15 January 2013.
The design of the Brigade's Combat Service Identification Badge (CSIB) is essentially identical to the unit’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia–Former Wartime Service (SSI–FWTS) patch that was worn on the upper right sleeve of the now-defunct Army Green Service Uniform; this is because the CSIB was intended to be the Army Service Uniform's equivalent of the Green Army Service Uniform's SSI–FWTS. (The SSI–FWTS has been redesignated for the Army Green Service Uniform, or AGSU, as the SSI–MOHC for Military Operations In Hostile Conditions.) You can read an explanation of the insignia's symbolism by clicking on the link below to the unit's SSI.
