Originally organized as an Infantry Company of the South Carolina National Guard (née South Carolina Troops) around 1903, the unit today designated as the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade has undergone a mind-boggling number of redesignations, so many so that it is almost ironic in light of the unit’s motto “Steadfast of Purpose.”
In the nearly twelve decades of its existence, it has been designated an Ammunition Train Company, Military Police, Company, Repair Parts Company, Administration Company, Personnel Service Company, Support Battalion, Maintenance Battalion, Antiaircraft Artillery Detachment/Group, Signal Group, and Artillery (though not in that order). It received its current designation when it was consolidated with Detachment 1, Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 218th Infantry Brigade, and HHC, 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
The Brigade’s Campaign credits include three from World War I—St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Lorraine 1918—and six from World War II, including Tunisia, Sicily, Rome-Arno, Northern France, Southern France, and Rhineland (Sicily and Southern France campaigns earned Arrowheads).
