The 220th Military Police Brigade was first constituted in the Army Reserve as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 220th Military Police Group on 3 April 1959 and was activated on 25 May 1959 in Washington, D.C. A decade later, on 23 July 1960, it relocated to Rockville, Maryland, then almost ten years later (in April 1970) moved once again to its current home of Gaithersburg, Maryland.
It became a brigade through a 10 December 1971 reorganization and redesignation to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD), 220th Military Police Brigade. Its structure was changed again when its HHD became Headquarters and Headquarters Company on 16 April 1980. The Brigade has been called into active Federal service just once, from February 2003 to April 2004, as part of the leadup to the launch and initial prosecution of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As a subordinate unit of the 377th Theater Support Command, the Brigade suffered five fatal casualties during its deployment to Iraq, for which it was awarded an Operation Iraqi Freedom campaign streamer.
The 220th Military Police Brigade Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB) uses the same insignia as the one found on the color version of the Brigade’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, but as a metal badge rather than a sew-on or stick-on patch.
