The 228th Signal Brigade Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB) uses the same design as the color version of the Brigade’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Military Operations in Hostile Conditions insignia that was approved on 6 April 1978.
Orange and white used for the interior of the shield-shaped insignia are the official branch colors of the Signal Corps. Blue and white are the colors used by Infantry units since the start of the Revolutionary War as well as by the South Carolina Army National Guard, and their use here is a reference to the unit’s heritage (it was originally created as an Infantry Regiment) and war experience (existing units used to organize the unit had fought as Infantry in the Korean War).
An upright bayonet alludes to the unit’s long military history, including predecessor units’ service in the Infantry when first formed in 1907. The crescent is taken from the South Carolina State Flag and is a reference to the organization’s home state, and the lightning flash on the crescent is a symbol of modern electronic Signal Corps technology.
