U.S. ARMY 22ND SIGNAL BRIGADE COMBAT SERVICE IDENTIFICATION BADGE (CSIB)

Upon activation in December, 1945, the 22nd Signal Service Group was tasked with supporting the Army of Occupation in post-war Germany, a mission it carried out until it was inactivated two-and-a-half years later. The outbreak of the Korean War led to its redesignation as the 22nd Signal Group, its allotment to the Regular Army, and its activation in Korea on November 1, 1951. It was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its support efforts in the five campaigns in which it participated.

Like many U.S. Army units, the unit was stationed in Germany from the early part of the 1960s through the 1980s, where it underwent a series of reorganizations and redesignations; it was given its current designation as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 22nd Signal Brigade in 1981. Some elements of the brigade deployed to Saudi Arabia to support Operation Desert Storm, and in 1995 the headquarters and other sub-units were sent to Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of the NATO Implementation Force, earning an Army Superior Unit for its work in providing communications for U.S., Russian, Turkish, and other coalition forces.

In 2002, all the brigade’s battalions were deployed to Iraq in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the first of two missions in the country. The brigade returned in 2005 for a year-long deployment. After its return in 2006, it was subsequently inactivated for the final time in May, 2007, having established a legacy that made it more than deserving of the motto “Eager Elites.”

On the  for the 22nd Signal Brigade, lightning flashes are used as symbols of the speed of modern communication. The eagle is taken from the Coat of Arms for the city of Frankfurt, where the unit was located for the bulk of its activation periods. This insignia was taken from the color version of the Brigade's unit patch, or Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI), that is now worn on the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and was previously worn on the old Army Green Uniform discontinued in October 2015.
