The 230th Sustainment Brigade Combat Service Identification Badge is a facsimile of its Shoulder Sleeve Insignia approved in 2007. The three primary colors used for the insignia—red, white, and blue—are also the colors of the flags of the United States and the state of Tennessee, where the "Old Hickory Volunteers" originated. A buff border combined with the red field represents the branch colors of Sustainment units, while a white chevron symbolizes the support function carried out by the brigade and the upright military sword represents the unit’s ability to exercise military force. Three stars represent the state of Tennessee’s three divisions: East, Middle, and West.
Combat Service ID Badges were introduced at the same time as the Army Service Uniform (ASU) as a way of replacing the colored Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn on the now-defuncti Army Green Uniform. They are placed on the right side of the coat/jacket worn with the ASU and the Mess Dress uniforms; they may also be worn on the uniform shirt of the Class B ASU. Complete wear guidance is found in
DA 670-1, Section 22-17.
