The foundations of “Order Government Freedom”— unit motto of the 353rd Civil Affairs Command—are symbolically displayed in the Command’s Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB. In the center of the badge, a quill pen represents order through the drafting of laws; the sword stands for the military capability to bring order out of conflict; the crown represents government; and the torch above them all is guidance and leadership based on the light of liberty and freedom.
In September 2005, the Command was deployed to Baghdad to assist citizens in ensuring the delivery of essential services and to help create building blocks for economic recovery. Among the areas on which the group focused were provision of clean water, monetary compensation for property damaged during combat, assistance in securing employment, and even providing havens for victims of domestic violence. For its service from January to December of 2006, the Command was honored with an Army Superior Unit Award, followed two-and-a-half years later by a Meritorious Unit Commendation (for service performed between June 2008 and August 2009).
