After extensive service in both World War II and Korea under the respective designations 36th Engineer Combat Regiment and 36th Engineer Combat Group, today’s 36th Engineer Brigade was given its next-to-last designation, 36th Engineer Group, in 1953. Though activated save for a 13-month blip in 1972-1973, the unit did not deploy in support of another conflict until the First Gulf War in 1990-1991, where it took part in all three campaigns and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation.
But its pace has picked up considerably since the launch of the Global War on Terror. As the 36th Engineer Group, it deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) for its 2005-2006 tour. As the 36th Engineer Brigade, it was awarded two more MUCs, one for its service in Afghanistan in 2007-2008 and another for a deployment to Iraq in 2010-2011. In total, it has taken part in five of the campaigns in the War on Terror, one in Afghanistan (Consolidation II) and four in Iraq: Iraqi Governance, National Resolution, Iraqi Sovereignty, and New Dawn.
