The 38th Sustainment Brigade Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB) is identical to the color version of its Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, which was approved while Soldiers still wore it on the Class A Army Green Service uniform. CSIBs were introduced when the Army replaced the Green Service uniform with the blue Army Service Uniform in 2008 with a mandatory wear date of 2015.
From its founding in 1916 until 1959, the 38th Sustainment Brigade served as an Infantry unit, and it was during World War II, while designated as Headquarters Company, 151st Infantry Regiment and assigned to the 38th Infantry Division that an event occurred that inspired its official nickname, “Avengers.” Following the 38th Infantry Division’s successful clearing of the Philippine Peninsula in February 1945, General Douglas MacArthur is said to have declared the Division the “Avengers of Bataan.”
When the 38th Sustainment Brigade was formed as an independent Brigade in 2008, it chose “Avengers” as its nickname—a decision validated in 2011 when the U.S. Army Center for Military History granted the Brigade the moniker as a Special Designation. The Brigade’s motto, “Never Quit,” reflects the type of dedication and commitment that led to the unit earning not only an Army Meritorious Unit Commendation for its actions in the Philippines, but also a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for its role in the liberation of that nation from the Japanese.
