The design of the 412th Engineer Command Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB) is a direct copy of the color version of the Command’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, also called a shoulder patch or unit patch. That insignia was originally approved for the 412th Engineer Brigade on 8 November 1967. It was redesignated for the 412th Engineer Command less than three months later on 4 February 1968.
Comprising just three colors—the primary and secondary branch colors of the Corps of Engineers, scarlet and white, plus a healthy dose of blue to form our nation’s colors—and a shield-style shape, the insignia recalls the Engineer’s castle associated with the branch insignia through the use of crenallated red bars that resemble the top of embattled castle wall. The curvy blue area suggests the Mississippi River valley, a nod to the organization’s location in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
