Though officially nicknamed “The Protectors,” a great deal of the work the 42nd Military Police Brigade’s work since its reactivation in 2004 has involved education and training of Iraqi military and civilian police personnel in a variety of techniques, skills, and procedures for detecting and eliminating terrorist operations and deterring new threats from rising.
During its first tour in 2004, which saw the Brigade deployed to Iraq less than a month after it was activated, several of the Brigade’s subordinate units trained Baghdad police department cadets, covering such field as first aid, human rights, legal matters, and small-arms instruction. Other units worked with Iraqi Officers on counterterrorism tactics and strategies, and the Brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company was subsequently recognized for its "Integrity of Action" with a Meritorious Unit Commendation. And during its 2008 deployment, one of the Brigade’s main missions was detainee reconciliation, e.g., seeking to increase the employment opportunities of freed detainees by teaching them fundamentals like reading and writing as well as technical trade skills.
The 42nd Military Police Brigade Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB, is a badge version of the colored version of the unit’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. CSIBs were introduced along with the Army Service Uniform and is that uniform’s version of the colored patch formerly worn on the discontinued Army Green Uniform.
