The Combat Service ID Badge of the 460th Chemical Brigade is a pin-on metal version of the full-color Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) approved for the unit on 16 September 1987. Unlike the subdued versions of the SSI worn on the Army Combat Uniform, the color version used on the CSIB incorporates cobalt blue and yellow, branch colors of the Chemical Corps, for the three areas inside the benzene ring (taken from the branch insignia of the Corps). The three areas represent the three chemical states of matter—solid, gaseous, or liquid—and the upright sword signifies military readiness.
Inactive since September 2008, the 460th Chemical Brigade was an Army Reserve unit subordinate to the 90th Regional Readiness Command, which became the 90th Sustainment Brigade at the time of the Brigade’s inactivation. The Brigade was headquartered at Camp Pike in North Little Rock, Arkansas, but hosted the annual Rio Bravo chemical exercise held annually in New Mexico. Its motto, “Cover The Force,” applied to all three aspects of the Chemical brigade mission: reconnoitering to detect chemical weapons, decontaminating affected personnel, equipment, and geographical areas; and generating smoke to shield maneuver elements from any detection.
