From its formation in 1942 until its inactivation in 1962, the unit now known as the 48th Chemical Brigade had been designated as a Battalion and Group—always with the numerical designation 81st—and had called several U.S. Army bases home, including Fort D.A. Russell, Fort Leonard Wood, and Fort Bragg (renamed Fort Liberty in June 2023.). Though redesignated as a Brigade with its current numerical designation in 2000, the unit was not activated until 2007, this time in yet another new home: Fort Hood in Texas, which was also renamed Fort Cavazos.
In addition to its Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, the 48th Chemical Brigade consists of four Chemical battalions and an Ordnance Battalion; of these, only the 2nd Chemical Battalion 79th Ordnance Battalion is also stationed at Fort Cavazos. The modular nature of today’s Army means a Brigade’s battalions are deployed geographically to ensure fastest mobilization in order to fulfill the unit motto to "Protect The Nation," so the other three battalions are found at Aberdeen Proving Ground (22nd), Fort Stewart (83rd), and Fort Lewis (110th).
