The design of the 49th Military Police Brigade Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB, was taken from the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 49th Infantry Brigade (the 49th MP also inherited the motto “Pride and Power”), which was one of the Brigade’s earlier designations that was formed in 1965 as a Headquarters and Headquarters Company and relieved from assignment to the 49th Infantry Division. Interestingly, the numeric designation of the 49th was originally the 52nd, but in 1947 it was changed to the 49th as a reference to the “49’ers” of the California Gold Rush. A gold diamond on the patch represents a gold nugget, while the blue represents Infantry; the line represents the South Fork American River, and the red sun is an allusion to California as the Sunshine State.
Combat Service ID Badges are worn on the right side of the Army Service/Dress and Mess/Evening Mess Uniforms. On the ASU, males wear it centered on the breast pocket, while females wear it parallel to the waistline on the lower half of the jacket. For Mess/Evening Mess uniforms, the CSBI is worn centered between the top buttons (male) or bottom two buttons (female).
