The 4th Sustainment Command was constituted in January, 1952 and activated in Italy a month later, only to be inactivated two years later. It was activated again in 1958 in Verdun, France. Throughout the Cold War era, it was stationed in Europe and supported United States Army Europe (USAEUR). Over the decades leading up to its designation as the 4th Sustainment Command in 2008, it was also designated as the 4th Support Center and the 4th Material Management Center Corps Support Command.
In the spring of 2011, the unit was mobilized and subsequently took command of the Joint Sustainment Command Afghanistan previously held by 184th Expeditionary Sustainment Command. It currently is organized under the U.S. Army Reserve.
The CSIB (Combat Service Identification Badge) of the 4th Sustainment Command employs red, white, and blue—national colors for the United States—in a circular design featuring four interlocking arrows. In addition to signifying the organization's preparedness to deploy and serve anywhere in the four corners of the earth, the arrows stand for the Command's numerical designation. The unit's motto and nickname, "Leaders in Logistics," can be found on its unit crest.
