The Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB) was created at the same time that the Army introduced the Army Service Uniform to replace its Class “A” Green Service uniform, with the CSIB taking the place of full-color Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) worn on the old Army “Greens.” As such, the CSIB features the same insignia found on the SSI. The CSIB is worn on the right side of the uniform, with males wearing it on the breast pocket and females wearing it centered between the two lowermost buttons, parallel to the waistline.
The 525th Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade CSIB has three distinct components: a black-and-yellow checkered area at the top, a lightning flash, and a blue and silver field. Oriental blue and silver gray are the colors of Military Intelligence units, while the lightning flash symbolizes the communications and electronic warfare capabilities of the Brigade. Checkered areas are an allusion to secrecy and the covert nature of many of the missions undertaken by Military Intelligence units, and the colors of black and yellow are emblematic of vigilance throughout both night and day.
