The 525th Military Intelligence Brigade was born out of the consolidation of the 218th Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment and the 525th Interrogation Team, constituted June 1944 and April 1946 respectively. On 16 June 1979, the descendants of those units, the 218th Military Intelligence Detachment and the 525th Military Intelligence Group, were consolidated as Headquarters and Operations Company, 525th Military Intelligence Group (MIG) and activated at Fort Bragg (Fort Liberty as of June 2023). It was redesignated as HQ and HQ Detachment, 525th MIG in 1982, then in 1985 received its as Military Intelligence Brigade.
Precisely when the unit received its Airborne designation is unclear—it could be as early as 1978—but we do know when the unit’s insignia was no longer authorized to be worn with an Airborne tab: 16 March 2009. According to the Institute of Heraldry, this is the date that that the Brigade was officially reorganized and redesignated as the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade. It was a designation it would not hold for long: In 2014, it was redesignated again as a Military Expeditionary Brigade, but this time with an “Expeditionary” classification.
