The colors blue and orange on the Combat Service Identification Badge for the 63rd Aviation Brigade are the colors usually associated with Aviation units. The Pegasus alludes to both the location of the unit and its mission of flight. Kentucky is the unit’s location, which is considered the horse capital of the world. The arched blue chief denotes the horizon and the unit’s determination to accomplish any mission. The arrowhead with a star indicates the readiness and constancy of the unit, and the upward direction of the arrowhead suggests the unit’s commitment to a higher standard. The stars in groups of six and three indicate 63, the unit’s designation. The unit motto is "Unbridled Thunder".
In 1986, as the 63rd Aviation Group assigned to the 35th Infantry Division, the unit saw no combat deployment, but supported the division in its combat readiness and training until 1995 when it became the 63rd Aviation Group and became independent of the division. The 63rd Aviation Group was comprised of a command aviation battalion, a support aviation battalion, an assault helicopter battalion, a light helicopter battalion, and one air traffic service battalion. Its first deployment was in 1998 to the Esmereldas in Ecuador as part of United States Southern Command exercise "Neuvos Horizontes '98".
