Authorized for wear on the Army Service/Dress Uni-form coat and Mess/Evening Mess Uniform jacket, the Combat Service Identification Badge is a pin-on metal facsimile of the full-color version of a unit’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI), or unit patch. Since it was stood up in 2007, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 648th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade has deployed for active Federal service only once (and it earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation during that tour in 2012). However, many of the Brigade’s subordinate components have deployed overseas since the Brigade was formed, with the destination in almost every case being Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom in the War on Terrorism.
A few examples include (but are not limited to) the 810th Engineer Company’s 2009 deployment to Afghanistan; 2010 saw the 190th Military Police Company providing security services at Bagram Air Force base in Kabul; the 877th Engineer Company was sent to Afghanistan in 2011; and the 1st Battalion, 214th Field Artillery Regiment helped protect Shindand Air Base as part of Task Force Granite in 2013. Most recently, in 2018 64 Soldiers served with the 3rd Infantry Division's Main Command Post Operational Detachment in Afghanistan, while another 26 Soldiers with the 648th Military Engagement Team had taken part in support missions across the Middle East.
