The 65th Field Artillery Brigade Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB, employs the same design as the full-color version of the Brigade’s unit patch (Shoulder Sleeve Insignia). Several of its elements pay tribute to the unit’s service under different designations. For example, the blue and red fields divided by the yellow lightning flash represent Artillery (red and yellow) and the Brigade’s joint sections and mission with the Air Force and Marine Corps (blue) as a Fires Brigade. The flash also recalls the unit’s nickname, “American Thunder.”
A field piece indicates the Brigade’s primary mission, while the pair of dice showing “6” and “5” not only represent mission accomplishment (the combination is always a winning roll in craps when not playing as the House), but also stand for the unit’s current numerical designation and the numerical designation of a unit that entered its lineage (XI Corps Artillery, 6+5 = 11). The black disc alone signifies munitions, while the white circle combined with the black disc suggests the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of I Corps; the Brigade served as I Corps Artillery for two dozen years (1984 to 2008).
