The 650th Military Intelligence Group Combat Service ID Badge is based upon the color version of the Group’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. (Interestingly, that insignia was approved as an exception to policy by the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Department of the Army.) The shape of the shield is based upon the Allied Command Operations patch and invokes the unit’s mission to shield allies from danger through its operations.
A sunburst in the background stands for the Group’s noteworthy counterintelligence record over the decades and highlights the Group’s relationship with the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Its rays allude to quill points that, when combined with the two swords and olive wreath, that the Group’s unique nature as the lone multinational unit tasked with counterintelligence that is assigned to Allied Command Operations. The chess knight is a classic image used for the heraldry of units involved in covert or secretive intelligence of psychological operations because of its strategic ability to “leap over” enemy units.
