Designed for wear with the Army Service Uniform, the 71st Military Intelligence Brigade Combat Service Identification Badge, also referred to as a Combat Service ID Badge or CSIB, takes its design from the Brigade’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) and is worn on the ASU in lieu of the SSI-Military Operations in Hostile Conditions (MOHC) Insignia. (Complete guidance on the wear of the CSIB is found in paragraph
22–17, “Identification Badges,” in the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1.)
The SSI was originally approved for wear by the 71st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade on 29 July 2010 but was subsequently amended to change the symbolism on 22 November 2011. It was given its current designation as the 71st Military Intelligence Brigade SSI on 1 September 2016 and is worn today by personnel in the 71st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade.
Its arrowhead shape recalls the Brigade’s historical lineage and its past service as part of the 36th Infantry division. The background color of oriental blue is the branch color of the Military Intelligence Corps, while the Griffin—an image commonly used in heraldry for Military Intelligence—is the embodiment of vigilance, courage, and alertness, a reference to the uniquely qualified Soldiers assigned the Military Intelligence mission.
The white and black of the Griffin’s eye suggest the overt and clandestine nature of the unit’s former Battlefield Surveillance mission and its current service in Military Intelligence. A pair of lightning flashes bookends the Griffin and harkens back to the unique mix of Communication, Electronic Warfare, and Cavalry components in the Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, representing the speed, range, and agility of its target engagement capabilities.
“On The Hunt,” the Brigade’s motto, is not displayed on its SSI or its Combat Service ID Badge.
