The January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1, “Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia,” describes the Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB, as “a pin-on badge
authorized to be worn on the Army service/dress uniform and the Mess and Evening Mess uniforms in place of the SSI–MOHC [Shoulder Sleeve Insignia–Military Operations in Hostile Conditions].”
But with all due respect to the Army Publishing Directorate, this definition is far from precise.
For one thing, the phrase “worn on the…Mess and Evening Mess uniforms
in place of the SSI–MOHC” implies that insignia was worn on those uniforms when in was not. And with the introduction of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) in November 2018, there are now two “Army service/dress” uniforms: the AGSU and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU), the latter of which will retain its “service/dress” status until 1 October 2027.
So to be clear, the CSIB is worn only on the blue Army Service/Dress Uniform and Mess/Evening Mess Uniforms. Complete guidance on the wear of the CSIB is found in Chapter 22-17 of the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1, with specific instructions applicable to the CSIB beginning at
(Chapter 22-17c) and continuing in later sections of the chapter.
