Created as a replacement for the colored Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Former Wartime Service (SSI-FWTS) insignia worn on the right sleeve of the old Class A Green Army Service Uniform whose wear authorization ended on 30 October 2015, the Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB) is worn on the right side of the blue Army Service Uniform (including Dress variant) that replaced it, as well as on the blue Mess and Evening Mess Uniforms. It is also authorized for wear on the Service Uniform shirt of the Class B ASU.
Personnel may wear no more than two ID badges on one side or pocket of the ASU and no more than one ID badge on one side or pocket of the AGSU. When worn on the ASU or the Mess and Evening Mess uniforms, however, the Combat Service ID Badge is given special status: Any other ID badge required to be worn on the right side may be moved to the left to allow the CSIB to stand alone. Also, the CSIB is exempt from the requirement that miniature medals be worn on Mess and Evening Mess uniforms because are no miniature versions of it manufactured.
Combat Service Identification Badges are authorized by the Chief of Staff of the United State Army and require the wearer to have been deployed in a Designated Campaign and met certain other conditions. A full explanation of these requirements is found in the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1, paragraph 21–18,
