The design of the 75th Ranger Regiment Special Troops Battalion’s Combat Service ID Badge is based entirely the unit’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, which in turn was based almost completely on the design of the 75th Ranger Regiment Shoulder Sleeve Insignia that was originally approved on 26 July 1984. It was redesignated for the 75th Ranger Regiment on 14 February 1986, with patches for the Regiment’s individual Battalions (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) subsequently being approved on 26 July 1984.
But the Special Troops Battalion had not yet been established at that time. Its origins can be traced back to two units: an element of the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional) organized in October 1943 and Company B, 1st Ranger Battalion. Both units would undergo several redesignations, with the original 5307th becoming the 1st Battalion, 75th Infantry in June 1954 and then being redesignated as redesignated on 1 January 1969 as Company N, 75th Infantry.
On 3 February 1986, it was consolidated with above former Company B, 1st Ranger Infantry Battalion, with the new merged unit designated as Company N, 75th Infantry Ranger Regiment. Finally, Company N, 75th Ranger Regiment was redesignated as HQ and HQ Company, Special Troops Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, and the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia upon which its CSIB is based was approved for it on 7 April 2006.
As of Autumn 2023, the 75th Regimental Special Troops Battalion is based at Fort Moore in Georgia (previously known as Fort Benning) and consists of its HQ and HQ Company and four other companies:Communications, Military Intelligence, Operations, and Reconnaissance.
