9th Theater Support Command’s lineage can be traced to the 9th Logistical Command, constituted and activated in May, 1960 on the island of Okinawa.
The 9th Theater Support Command was the senior logistical organization responsible for planning and directing support for combat service throughout the U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM). As the center of major regional logistics support, it carried out rear-area operations that affected units within its area of responsibility. Although based in Japan, a significant number of the Command’s personnel trained in the United States, many of them on the east coast. Uniquely, the Commanding General of U.S. Army, Japan also headed up 9th Theater Support.
In 2007, I Corps (Forward) was activated in Japan and assumed the function and missions that had previously been the responsibility of 9th Theater Support Command, which was subsequently inactivated.
The Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB) of 9th Support Command features the United States’ national colors of red, white, and blue. Administration and logistical support is symbolized by the white star; the unit’s numerical designation is commemorated with the nonagon (nine-sided geometric figure). “Service to our customers,” the Command’s motto, can be found on its Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly called a unit crest.
