A component of United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), the United States Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) is the U.S. Command HQ for joint U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. It closely coordinated with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), with the U.S. Commander of the dual-hatted as the Commander of USFOR-A and the Deputy Commander of Support at USFOR-A overseeing day-to-day operations. This type of relationship continued when the ISAF was replaced by the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission, with General John W. Nicholson serving as the commander of both Resolute Support Mission and USFOR-A.
This Combat Service ID Badge is authorized for wear by Army personnel who saw combat service in USFOR-A. The sheaths of wheat represent a prosperous Afghan government, while the sword is symbol of the security provided by Afghan National Security Forces, U.S. military, and Coalition partners (the unit's motto is "Strength Through Partnership"). Behind the sword is a wings device that denotes the Afghan Air Corps and the technological prowess it brings to the area of operations. The snow-capped mountains are the Hindu Kush mountains, an icon of Afghan sovereignty, further reinforced by the colors red, green, and black taken from the Afghanistan National Flag.
