The Legal Services Agency Combat Service ID Badge, or CSIB, is based upon the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia-Military Operations in Hostile Conditions insignia (SSI-MOHC), was approved on 8 May 1984 while that insignia was still designated as SSI-FWTS (Former WarTime Service).
It features a gold-bordered rectangular shape with arced top and bottom and an interior of counterchanged blue and white quarters containing images of a scales of justice and a gridlined globe (both also counterchanged in blue and white) surmounted by gold sword.
Blue and white are used for the quarters to reflect the Agency’s status as an organization in the Adjutant General’s Corps, while gold is the heraldic color of excellence and high achievement. The overall shape of the shield is highly similar to that of the shield carried by Roman Soldiers, and combined with the golden sword symbolizes the Agency’s connection to the military while invoking the view of the Romans as a lawmaking culture.
A scale is a commonly used image for insignia of units involved with maintaining law and order. Its placement above the gridline globe denotes the worldwide scope of the Agency’s mission and the application of the principles of equal justice regardless of location.
